Client: US Department of Defense
– Hampton & Newport News, VA, USA
A large combined US Air Force and Army facility spanning two locations. Air operations include elite air combat command and fighter wings, and aviation engineering. It is America’s oldest continuously active military airfield.
Engineering challenge A combination of flexible operational capabilities and enhanced safety features, meeting extensive military specifications.
Custom solution The solution centered around Spec-Dor’s Full Featured Captive Door Section (FFCDS), allowing for independent invidividual panel movement in either direction, enabling partial openings that significantly reduce energy costs and improve operational efficiency. This feature is particularly valuable when full door openings aren’t necessary, cutting down on both opening times and energy loss. Additional features addressed location- and cost-specific factors:
  • Galvanized finish for superior corrosion resistance and distinctive appearance
  • Modular construction allowing for shipping using standard flatbed trucks, reducing transportation costs
  • Integration with Spec-Dor’s proven rail drainage system
  • Precision control systems for precise positioning of door sections and automatic stopping for exact closing for truly superior seals.
  • Dual-sided safety edges on every door section
  • Advanced rail drainage system to prevent water and ice accumulation
