We’re proud to share that Spec-Dor’s work was highlighted in Xavier David’s Feature Project: Airplane Hangar, which explored the design and construction of a vital aviation facility at Aéroport de Saint-Barthélemy–Remy-de-Haenen.
Article Highlights
The article tells the story of how the original hangar, damaged by Hurricane Irma in 2017, needed more than just a quick fix. Instead, the airport pursued a long-term, hurricane-resilient solution. Key points included:
- From Bifold to Sliding Door: The old bifold door was replaced with a stronger custom-engineered sliding door to withstand hurricane forces.
- Integrated Expansion: The upgrade included not just the new door, but also additional offices, workshops, and storage space, all unified by new cladding.
- Durability and Materials: Spec-Dor’s door was hot-dip galvanized in zinc, providing abrasion resistance and corrosion protection against the humid, salty coastal environment.
- Engineering and Transport: Spec-Dor engineered large steel trusses that could both span a 70-foot (21.3 m) wide opening and be shipped efficiently in containers from Québec to St. Barts.
- Perfect Fit: After months of design collaboration, the door system was assembled on-site and integrated seamlessly into the upgraded facility.
The final result: a modernized hangar with improved resilience, functionality, and architectural integration—quietly serving as critical infrastructure for the island’s aviation operations.
